[pwc] images appear too bright... howto for auto-compensation?

Hi everyone

I've already written several apps that use the PWC, but I've found that 
I'm always having to manually adjust brightness, white-balance levels, 
etc, so that the image doesn't appear washed-out with white, or too dark.

This is probably a very common question to ask, but can anyone explain 
vaguely, or point me to a better description, of how one could 
automatically optimize the image so that it appears 'natural'?

Does this have something to do with gamma values? Should there be 
something monitoring the gamma values of the incoming images, and 
adjusting parameters like the AGC / AWB on the fly?
